Operational Updates

 During 13 – 17 November, WFP China organized a study visit for 6 members of project management authorities of the Xiangxi Preschool Nutrition Improvement Project to Guizhou Province, which is the first province in China to engage in preschool nutrition improvement and has taken proactive steps to promote and extend the preschool nutrition improvement at the policy, financial, institutional, and programme levels. The participants visited the kindergartens and food distribution centres, and had meetings with the local government authorities. The lessons and experiences learned in Guizhou will greatly inform the scale up of WFP’s initiative in Guangxi.

  • During 19 – 21 November, a monitoring mission to the Kiwi Smallholder Farmer project in Jinzhai, Anhui Province, was fielded headed by the Deputy Director,
    Caroline LEGROS, with colleagues from the domestic programmes and communication teams. Mr. Imed KHANFIR, technical officer from P4P unit of the HQ joined the mission. The mission members checked the project’s progress against the work plan, visited the pro-poor farm cooperative and the aggregator, interviewed the farm households, and had discussions with the project management. Key areas of improvement were identified and a timeline for follow-up activities was agreed upon.

  • On 27 November, a side event on South-South and triangular cooperation was convened on the margins of the Second Regular Session of the Executive Board in Rome. The event focused on WFP’s role in brokering South-South and triangular cooperation in the areas of nutrition, school meals, and shockresponsive safety nets, which are at the heart of equipping countries to bridge the humanitariandevelopment-peace nexus. H.E. Ambassador NIU,
    Permanent Representative of China to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture, attended the event and shared China’s experience in linking smallholder farmers to markets to highlight the strengthened China-WFP joint efforts for South-South Cooperation.

  • October 31st - November 5th, Mr. David BEASLEY, the Executive Director of WFP, visited China. He participated in the Ministerial Forum on Global SouthSouth Cooperation in Agriculture in Changsha, delivered a keynote speech highlighting China’s success in reducing hunger and poverty, as well as the strong leadership and commitment China has shown on South-South Cooperation. He met with Chinese Vice Premier H.E. Hu Chunhua and had a bilateral meeting with the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs H.E. Qu Dongyu. On 3 November, the ED visited the Alibaba headquarters in Hangzhou where he signed a Letter of Intent for partnership between Alibaba and WFP - a milestone for the strategic cooperation between the organizations.
