Typhoon Morakot likely to land in Taiwan tonight

The Central Meteorological Office has issued an Red Warning for typhoon today:



At 5:00 a.m. the 8th typhoon in this year Morakot was centered about 270 km to east by south of Keelung, Taiwan province (23.4N, 123.8E) with maximum wind force up to scale 13 (40m/s).

It is forecasted to move west by north at speed of 15 km per hour approaching eastern coast of Taiwan. It may land in or glance off northeastern coast of Taiwan at tonight, and then get close to coast from northern Fujian to central Zhejiang.



Affected by it from day to tonight there will be high wind with scale 7 to 10 affecting east of Taiwan, most parts of East China Sea, Taiwan Straits, Bashi Channel, Balintang Channel, Taiwan and its coast, central and northern coast of Fujian, and coastal Zhejiang. The areas the center of typhoon passes will be hit by strong wind with scale 11 to 15.

Heavy rain or torrential rain will hit southeastern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, eastern Fujian, and Taiwan. Severe torrential rain is likely to hit southeastern Zhejiang, northeastern Fujian, and Taiwan. Parts of northeastern Taiwan will be hit by extreme torrential rain.

The 7th tropical storm Goni has weakened into a tropical depression. At 5:00 am today it was centered at 20.7N, 110.0E with maximum wind force up to scale 7 (16m/s). It is forecasted to move southwest at speed of 10 km per hour with weakening intensity. From day to tonight there will be high wind with scale 6 to 7 and isolated up to scale 8 affecting most parts of Hainan, central-western coast of Guangdong, and eastern coast of Hainan. Heavy rain or torrential rain is likely to hit Leihzou Peninsular, and Hainan. Severe torrential rain is going to hit northern and western Hainan. (Aug. 7)
