Sichuan - Ya’an Prefecture Earthquake Hong Kong Red Cross mobilizes RMB 1 Million for emergency relief

(Hong Kong.20 April 2013) A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Lushan County of Ya’an Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on Saturday, 20 April at 8:02 a.m., with more than 20 after-quakes were recorded. The areas around Lushan County are also affected. The Red Cross Society of China has launched donation appeal across the nation.

Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has decided to mobilize RMB 1 million for the area’s emergency relief. One HKRC staff has arrived the affected area for emergency need assessment and action planning, with another 3 HKRC staff members on their way.

The Sichuan Red Cross deployed staff to conduct emergency need assessment immediately after the earthquakes, and mobilized relief materials and tents to the affected areas. Tents were set up in sport stadium and school playgrounds for temporarily housing the affected people. Rescue and relief teams are also sent there.
