Pupils resume classes in NE China flood-hit township

NING'AN, Heilongjiang, Jun 13, 2005 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The surviving pupils of Shalan Central Primary School in Shalan Township of Ning'an City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, which was hit by a mountain torrent last Friday afternoon, resumed their classes Monday morning.

The source with the municipal education bureau said 150 pupils went to classes at 8:00 a.m. at the Shalan Middle School, about two kilometers from the township.

Teachers from the nearby city of Mudanjiang gave the pupils lessons concerning epidemic prevention and psychological health.

The provincial education department and Mudanjiang education bureau provided teaching materials, desks and chairs to the pupils while the Ning'an education bureau brought school bags, stationary and dishwares to the children.

As of Monday morning, 88 pupils from the primary school were confirmed dead in the mountain torrents. The demolished school is under reconstruction.
