A few days ago, extreme weather devastated Yancheng Funing and Sheyang county of Jiangsu Province by thunderstorms, torrential rain, hail and gale, and deadly tornado swept in some other areas in the province. Macau Red Cross (MRC) is highly concerned with the severity of damages, and promptly allocated RMB100,000 from the Disaster Relief Fund which is to be used for emergency relief purposes. A total of 1,000 family relief packages (worth MOP300,000), withdrawn from the Hubei Province Xiaogan City disaster preparedness warehouse, from which 800 packages delivered to Funing county and 200 packages to Sheyang county. It is hoped that these relief items would help to mitigate the most difficult moments of the victims.
At this stage, Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) transported 500 tents, 1,000 family relief packages and 3,000 cotton-padded jackets to Jiangsu Province Red Cross (JPRC), in addition to allocating RMB500,000 emergency fund used for acquiring relief supplies. The JPRC relief workers, brought with them tents and other supplies. and rushed to the sites to join the relief force.
Up till now, the death toll is 98 and 846 injured. Both Funing and Sheyang counties have been seriously impacted by the destruction of 1,962 houses, numerous vehicles swept away, factory buildings razed, schools collapsed, impassable roads, power outage and communications disrupted. Jiangsu Province triggered its emergency contingency mechanism and expanding relief efforts in the region. MRC will maintain close contacts with the local Red Cross, and communicating with RCSC for further rescue mission.
