CMA going all-out to deal with northward typhoon Muifa

The Central Meteorological Office continues to issue Orange alert for typhoon at 6:00 p.m. on August 7:

At 5:00 p.m. today, Muifa, the 9th typhoon in northwest Pacific Ocean, was centered about 420 km south by east of Chengshantou, Shandong province (33.8N, 123.9E) with maximum wind force up to scale 12 (33m/s).

It is forecasted to move north by west at speed of 20 km per hour approaching eastern coast of Shandong peninsular. It is likely to skim or land in eastern Shandong peninsular and continues to move northward approaching southern coast of Liaoning in the early morning or morning tomorrow.

Affected by Muifa, in the next 24 hours there will be gale with scale 7 to 9 affecting eastern Bohai, Bohai Strait, Yellow Sea, northern East China Sea, coast of Liaoning, Shandong Peninsular and its coast, and coast of Jiangsu. Muifa will bring gale up scale 10 to 12 on its way. Coast of Shanghai and Yangtze River mouth will be hit by strong wind with 6 to 8. Heavy rain or rainstorm is forecasted to affect central and eastern Shandong, most parts of Liaoning, and southeastern Jilin. Parts of eastern Shandong peninsular and central and eastern Liaoning will be hit by severe rainstorm.

To cope with the typhoon Muifa, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has started Level Two emergency response calling all levels of meteorological departments in the affected areas to try the best to strengthen monitor, forecast and service.

At the same time, the National Meteorological Center of CMA has carried out intensive and joint consultation with National Satellite Meteorological Center and the provincial/municipal meteorological bureaus of Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong and Liaoning.

CMA also sent working groups to guide meteorological service in the affected areas. The Shanghai Typhoon Research Institute, which is under CMA, also sent an observation car to obtain data for study.

To mitigate the possible disaster brought by typhoon Muifa, CMA and local meteorological departments have strengthened cross-sector coordination to communicate information smoothly and provide timely forecast for evacuation. Decision-making meteorological service has also play an important role during the crucial time. (Aug. 7)
