SITUATION

1. ON 15, 18 AND 19 AUGUST HEAVY STORMS AFFECTED NUMEROUS COUNTIES IN DANDONG CITY AND DALIAN CITY IN THE LIAONING PROVINCE IN NORTH-EAST CHINA CAUSING MOUNTAIN TORRENTS, RIVER FLOODING AND MUD-ROCK FLOWS OVER A WIDE AREA. STORM CENTRE LOCATED IN DAGUANZHI TOWN IN XIUYAN COUNTY AND TOTAL RAINFALL WAS BETWEEN 300 AND 450 MM.

ESTIMATED DAMAGE (INITIAL ASSESSMENT)

2. 63 PERSONS DEAD, 38 REPORTED MISSING AND 860 INJURED. 13,000 HOUSES SEVERELY DAMAGED AND APPROXIMATELY 10,000 FAMILIES AFFECTED. OVER 1,000 ANIMALS AND 49,000 POULTRY PERISHED. 60,000 HA AFFECTED (32,000 SERIOUSLY) INVOLVING 80 COUNTIES AND 676 VILLAGES. 5,600 HA FARMLAND INUNDATED. MANY BRIDGES DESTROYED AS WELL AS HIGHWAYS. ELECTRICITY/TELECOMMUNICATION IN FIVE COUNTIES CUT OFF. ESTIMATED ECONOMIC LOSS 1,100,000 YUAN RMB (APPROX. US DLRS 300,000).

3. SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ORGANIZED 3,000 RELIEF PERSONNEL IN RENDERING EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE, AND THE TRANSFER AND RESETTLEMENT OF PEOPLE MADE HOMELESS.

4. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
