China: Polluted water in Songhua River moves out Tongjiang section

BEIJING, Dec 20, 2005 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The benzene slick in the Songhua River has passed the Tongjiang section where the Songhua joins the Heilong River bordering China and Russia.

According to a report by China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) Tuesday, the density of nitrobenzene was found to have increased in the Bacha section, 49 km upstream of Fuyuan, in the Chinese portion of the Helongjiang River. The chemical was measured by 1 a.m. Monday at a concentration of 0.0120 mg per liter, while in the Donggang section, 152 km upstream of Fuyuan, it was measured at a density of 0.1249 mg per liter.

The report said that in Tongjiang section, 11 km upstream of Sanjiangkou, the chemical density has kept declining, and by 10 p.m. on Monday, it reached 0.0152 mg per liter, showing that the slick has moved out the section.

Through 2 a.m. Tuesday, nitrobenzene in the Fuyuan section had not been detected, SEPA said.
