China, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos - Tropical cyclone TALIM, update (GDACS, DROMIC DSWD, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 19 July 2023)

  • Tropical Cyclone TALIM made landfall on 17 July over the southern Guangdong Province area (south-eastern China) and crossed north-western Vietnam on 18 July, resulting in displacement and damage.
  • According to media reports, at least 230,000 people have been displaced in China while in Vietnam, 30,000 people have been preventively evacuated from the areas forecast to be hardest hit in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong Provinces (north-eastern Vietnam). Moreover, the passage of TALIM over northern Luzon on 13-14 July resulted in almost 10,400 displaced people and more than 95,000 affected.
  • On 19-20 July hours moderate to very heavy rainfall is expected over south-eastern China, most of northern Vietnam and north-eastern Laos. Moderate rain is forecast over most of Luzon (Philippines).
