China: Oxfam's response on the earthquake in Panzhihua, Sichuan

HONG KONG: An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit Panzhihua in southwest Sichuan on Saturday, 30 August. Parts of Yunnan Province, which borders Sichuan, were also affected. According to the latest information, the death toll stands at 33, with 506 people injured. More than 250,000 houses are damaged and more than 150,000 people displaced.

The affected areas ofChuxiongzhou and Luquan, both in Yunnan, are two locations where Oxfam had previously been running anti-poverty projects.

OXFAM'S RESPONSE to the 30 AUGUST EARTHQUAKE

Yunnan:

- Coordinating with the local government of Luquan County and starting to deliver relief items in Tanglang Village

- Working with the Poverty Alleviation Offices of Yunnan and Chuxiongzhou to conduct needs assessments in Yongren, Yuanmou, Wuding and Dayao

Sichuan:

- Working with an organisation in Liangshanzhou and the local government of Huili County to conduct needs assessments, and starting to deliver relief items in Huili County, the epicentre of the earthquake
