Alert No.2 China Typhoon Winnie

Dear Friends,
Further to our Alert of 21 August, reports now indicate that in addition to the Zhejiang Province, the Provinces of Fujian, Jiangsu and Shandong have also been seriously affected by the passage of Typhoon Winnie.

Latest figures indicate that in these four provinces approximately 30 million people have been affected, more than 1million houses have been partially or totally damaged and nearly 1.5 million ha. of crops have been damaged or totally lost. The direct economic loss is now estimated at approximately USD 2.68 billion.

ACT/Amity Foundation reports that the Zhejiang Christian Council is working hard at the moment - collecting data and screening projects for recommendation. Pastors at prefecture and county churches are working together with the communities to help the needy and are playing an important part in disaster relief work.

In view of peoples' resilience and ability to recover from the disaster, ACT/Amity Foundation intends to limit its work to some of the worst affected areas, and has asked the Co-ordinating Office to issue an appeal for USD 100,000 for relief and rehabilitation projects in Zhejiang Province.

The Appeal will be issued as soon as further details are available from Amity Foundation.

For further information, please contact the ACT Co-ordinating Office.

Regards.
