Rebuilding Hope

In 2009, Taiwan experienced the worst damage in half century by Typhoon Morakot. It claimed 699 lives. Southern Taiwan was severely hit and most areas were devastated. With the generous support from the Hong Kong public, the Hong Kong Red Cross received altogether HK$104 million designated to Taiwan Typhoon operation. Help and hope were given to the affected communities.

The rehabilitation programmes supported by the Hong Kong Red Cross focused on building village houses for two villages in Laiyi and Taiwu Township, Pingtung County for aborigine tribe group threatened by landslide. A total of 350 permanent houses, including 232 in Laiyi Village and 118 in Taiwu Village, were completed this August and handed over to the villagers.
