Canada Provides Assistance to Taiwan Quake Victims

OTTAWA (Sept. 22) XINHUA - Canadian Minister for International Cooperation Maria Minna Wednesday announced a contribution of 500,000 Canadian dollars (about 335,000 U.S. dollars) to earthquake victims in the Chinese province of Taiwan.

"Tuesday's earthquake is the largest Taiwan has experienced this century and has caused severe damage and loss of life," the minister said in the announcement, adding that "the people in the area urgently need emergency supplies and medical assistance."

An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the center of the island Tuesday morning, leaving at least 1,800 people dead and 4,000 others injured.
