Chile – Forest Fires (DG ECHO, ONEMI, CONAF, Meteo Chile) (ECHO Daily Flash of 10 February 2017)

  • Regarding the wildfires that have been burning over the past month in Chile, as of 10 February, the National Authorities report 41 fires, of which 5 active and 36 controlled, in the regions of Valparaiso, Maule and Biobio. Casualties stand at 11 people dead, over 1 900 houses destroyed. A State of Emergency remains in the regions of O'Higgins, Maule, Biobio and La Araucania. As of 10 February, the National Authorities have issued a Red Alert for forest fires in the regions of Valparaiso and Maule.
  • A field assessment on fire behaviour is being carried out by 7 EU Civil Protection Team experts. In-kind assistance of protective and firefighting equipment from Austria, Spain and Sweden is in the process of being delivered (9-12 February).
  • The 177 EU firefighters from France, Portugal and Spain are completing their mission and are expected to return to Europe on 12 February.
