CHILE - EARTHQUAKE
UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
4 MARCH 1985

ON 3 MARCH 1985 AT 19H48 LOCAL TIME (22H48 GMT), A STRONG EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF CHILE. ACCORDING TO THE SEISMOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CHILE, INTENSITIES REGISTERED ON THE 12-POINT MERCALLI SCALE REACHED THE HIGHEST IN VALPARAISO (7-8), SANTIAGO AND TALCA (6-7) AND THE LOWEST IN COPIAPO (4-5). OTHER TOWNS AFFECTED: LA SERENA, RANCAGUA, CAUQUENES AND CONCEPCION. IN SANTIAGO THREE AFTER-SHOCKS OCCURRED AT 20H40 (INTENSITY 4-5), 20H50 (3-4) AND 21H33 (3-4).

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION FROM OFFICIAL SOURCES AND MASS MEDIA PUT DEATH TOLL AT 100 OF WHICH MORE THAN HALF IN THE CAPITAL WHERE HUNDREDS OF OLDER BUILDINGS COLLAPSED. UNDRO HAS REQUESTED FURTHER INFORMATION FROM UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT CO-ORDINATOR IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE. 1. NATURAL EMERGENCY OFFICE (ONEMI) REPORTS TOTAL PERSONS AFFECTED 976,048 OF WHOM 11,470 STILL IN SHELTER. 73,829 HOUSES DESTROYED AND 146,777 HOUSES DAMAGED. EMERGENCY OVERCOME RE WATER SUPPLY, TELEPHONE COMMUNICATIONS, ELECTRICITY.

EMERGENCY REQUIREMENTS NOT YET MET

2. FOODSTUFFS AND BASIC HOUSING MATERIAL (GALVANISED IRON AND ASBESTOS CEMENT FOR ROOFING AND PLASTIC SHEETING) ARE NEEDED. CONTRIBUTIONS FOR HOUSING MATERIALS PREFERRED IN CASH SINCE THESE MATERIALS CAN BE PRODUCED LOCALLY. EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE STILL REQUIRED FOR EVACUATION OF DEBRIS.
