HIGHLIGHTS
URGENT FUNDING NEEDED
• WFP urgently needs funds to assist refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons, host communities and food insecure Chadians affected by the June – August lean season. Due to low funds, 1.3 million crisis-affected people will not be assisted this month.
• While the 2021 UNHCR-WFP Joint Assessment Mission (JAM) recommended support for 75% of refugees in need of humanitarian assistance. The continued funding constraints have led to a further reduction in the number of refugees to be assisted at a minimum of 270,000, constituting 35% of the pre-crisis caseload.
• WFP plans to assist 310,000 new refugees and returnees who have fled the conflict in Sudan - more people continue to arrive every day. WFP also plans to assist 50,000 of the most vulnerable among host communities. To actualize its 8-month refugee response plan, WFP needs USD 129 million as the response has only received USD 13.6 million since the conflict began in April.
• The humanitarian situation is critical at the border crossing point of Adre, where over 63,000 new refugees from Sudan (UNHCR) have sought refuge since June 17th . UNHCR, CNARR and IOM estimates a total of more than 276,000 arrivals have crossed from Sudan since mid-April, seeking refuge in Chad’s Ouaddai, Sila and Wadi Fira provinces.
• Since April 26th , in support of the Government response, WFP’s Sudan crisis response has reached over 164,000 people*:
• Among those reached, 18,200 vulnerable people received malnutrition prevention and treatment interventions.
• WFP is deploying more staff for the Sudan crisis response, as well as a convoy of WFP 4x4 trucks, 10 Mobile Storage Units (MSU) and other WFP and partner cargo, from UNHRD Accra this week and equipment from UNHRD Dubai including 20 additional trucks. An ECHO flight is also expected from Europe with NGO cargo and WFP storage tents. This will strengthen the logistics hub WFP is building in the East, with 20 MSUs, 14 trucks and two all-terrain vehicles already in Chad. Thanks to donor contributions and internal advanced financing facilities, WFP was able to dispatch 15,230 MT of food to the East.
• With the start of the rainy season this month, the window for prepositioning enough commodities in the Sila province was missed. As a result, WFP and other humanitarian actors are calling for the addition of a helicopter under the management of the UN Humanitarian Air Service, to transport needed supplies and leave no one behind.
