HIGHLIGHTS
EMERGENCY SNAPSHOT
600,000+ crisis-affected people received WFP assistance since onset of Sudan crisis in April
-
WFP launched its response for the June- August lean season this month. Out of 1.9 million severely food insecure people (CH analysis, March 2023), WFP planned to assist 1 million. As funds have remained at 17% of requirements, WFP has targeted about 200,000 people in the prioritized provinces of the Lac, Bahr el Gazel, and Kanem.
-
Thanks to multilateral funds recently received, WFP will now be able to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) in July.
-
WFP has reached over 100,000 people affected by the Sudan crisis, including arrivals and the most vulnerable among host communities, as of mid-June. In support of the Government of Chad’s response, WFP has been providing critical food and nutrition assistance to people in the Ouaddai, Sila and Wadi Fira provinces since April 26th, working closely with UNHCR to support those who have been identified through its fixing exercise. Beneficiaries have included 9,000 vulnerable people who received malnutrition prevention and treatment interventions, comprising of pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls as well as children under 5 years old.
-
To support the refugee response in East Chad, since April 21st , WFP has prepositioned 5,590 metric tons of food – enough for approximately 110,000 people for three months. Immediate funding is required to assist from July onwards.
-
Key challenges:
- Road access, as rains have already started
- Operational costs are increasing (food/transport/security/M&E/surge)
- Delays in the provision of food assistance (27 entry points, new camps/new sites, access)
- Continuous new arrivals and targeting of most vulnerable within the host communities
- Communities face a decrease in food availability and increase staple food prices during this season - prices have risen sharply in the last five years. In 2022, prices of millet and sorghum increased by 47% and 37% respectively, compared to average prices from 2018 – 2022 in the Sahelian zone (WFP/Govt source).
- WFP’s 8-month refugee response plan is to assist 360,000 new refugees, new returnees and the most vulnerable among host populations, as well as 470,000 out of the 600,000 refugees already sheltering in Chad – with inclusion of logistics service provision for agencies. The current plan requires USD 142.6 million.
