Operational Updates
The Sudan crisis continues to put pressure on resources in Chad and this is now compounded by the start of the rainy season in June when road access is limited. The June - August lean season period also starts and will see 3.4 million Chadians severely food insecure (March 2024, Cadre Harmonisé projections).
As of May, over 604,000 Sudanese refugees (UNHCR) and 173,000 Chadian returnees (IOM) have fled from Sudan to Chad since April 2023. In a typical week, thousands of people cross into Chad’s border town of Adré, with the majority stating hunger as the main reason for leaving, rather than the clashes.
In May, WFP provided food assistance for 475,780 people in response to the Sudan crisis. Cumulatively, WFP has reached over 700,000 people, including new refugees, new returnees and the most vulnerable host populations. Of those reached, over 200,000 received interventions to prevent and treat malnutrition.
In May, WFP made strides in the targeting phase of the lean season response. WFP and partners trained approximately 1,000 enumerators (in Barh el Gazel, Ennedi Est, Kanem, Lac, Logone Oriental, Ouaddaï, Sila, Wadi Fira) who then began targeting and baseline data collection. WFP plans to assist 1 million Chadians with food assistance for its lean season response, in support of the Government of Chad’s National Response Plan, including malnutrition prevention, screening and referrals for 125,000 women and children.
In June, WFP Chad is planning on reaching over 2 million people with emergency response in support of the Government of Chad. This includes 1 million new and old refugees, returnees, host populations, and IDPs, and 1 million severe food insecure people during the lean season. This requires at least US$ 234 million for the next six months (June - November 2024).
