UNICEF Chad Humanitarian Flash Update No. 8 (Refugees)

27 June 2025

Highlights

  • Since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan on 15 April 2023, and as of 22 June 2025, the Chadian Government, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Organization for Migration have registered 863,501 refugees and 306,865 Chadian returnees. 61 per cent of the refugees and 67 per cent of the returnees are children under 18.
  • Due to a lack of humanitarian funding, on 23 June 2025, the Chadian Government announced that it would consider closing the border with Sudan to prevent refugees from crossing into Chad.
  • On 22 June 2025, UNICEF’s Executive Director, Catherine Russell, visited the town of Adré along the border with Sudan. Adré is one of the main entry points into Chad for Sudanese refugees.
  • Between 19 and 25 June 2025, UNICEF provided access to potable water to 48,689 people; 723 children received mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) through UNICEF’s child-friendly spaces (CFS); 216 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) benefited from treatment; and 319 children were immunized against measles.
