N'Djamena, 08 May 2018 | The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, has welcomed the formal accession of the Republic of Chad to the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF), in line with the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants.
The declaration remains the key outcome of the Leaders' Summit on Refugees held on September 20, 2016 in New York. It focuses on improving the autonomy and inclusion of refugees and providing increased support to host communities.
This decision of the government was made known to UNHCR in a letter signed in N’Djamena on 3 May 2018, by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Public Security and Local Governance, Mr Ahmat Mahamat Bashir and addressed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
UNHCR Representative in Chad, Mr. Mbili Ambaoumba said the development is a major step forward in protecting and improving the living conditions of refugees.
"As Chad is already the leading asylum destination in Africa in relation to the density of its population, this commitment by the government can only strengthen the pursuit of protection, assistance and the search for durable solutions for refugees and other displaced populations, as well as the communities that host them in Chad, "he said.
"Following the New York Declaration, UNHCR was mandated to prepare the global compact for refugees. We are working on it relentlessly and we remain committed to supporting the government in implementing this framework for action. Once again, I encourage the government to double its efforts to adopt an asylum law, which is essential to domesticate the international agreements to which Chad has adhered, including the CRRF, “explained Mr Mbili Ambaoumba.
