Time remaining before seasonal rains cut off sites in Darfur and Eastern Chad
As the ITCZ nears its northernmost extent of the season, seasonal rains have set in over most of Darfur and Eastern Chad, hampering access to IDPs and refugees. Heavy rains are expected this week in Ouaddai (Chad) and parts of Darfur. While large towns in Darfur are accessible, surrounding areas face access difficulties. By now, certain areas in West and South Darfur have already been cut off. Fuel deliveries have been restricted, contributing to fuel shortages in Sudan.
Regional Overview: Transport Corridors
After a brief period of drier weather, seasonal rains will resume over central portions of West Dar-fur, southern North Darfur and southern portions of Biltine. Seasonal rains will continue over South Darfur.
Heavy rainfall is possible during the period over Ouaddai in Chad, as well as southern West Dar-fur, parts of North and South Darfur in Sudan. This includes the cities of Abeche, Al Junaynah and Nyala. Rainfall amounts of 50 to 120+ mm are possible in this area. The heaviest rains will fall over the higher elevations.
