Chad, from herds to child health: An integrated livestock management approach to prevent acute malnutrition in children under 5 years of age

Synopsis (short abstract)

Chad continues to face alarmingly high and persistent levels of child acute malnutrition, despite extensive humanitarian investments over the past decades. This situation underscores the need to move beyond reactive models toward integrated and preventive approaches that address the root causes of persistent acute malnutrition. To respond to this challenge, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and partners designed and tested “Livestock for Health (L4H) – Integrated livestock management intervention to address child acute malnutrition” in Kanem and Barh El Gazel provinces. The approach aimed to reduce the dry-season peak of child acute malnutrition by strengthening the nutritional, productive and protective roles of livestock, while mitigating zoonotic health risks. The impact evaluation, using a randomized controlled trial, compared intervention and control communities to assess changes in nutrition, health, economics and resilience outcomes.
