UN peacebuilding delegation visits Central African Republic

A delegation from the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund is conducting a week-long mission in the Central African Republic (CAR), which remains beset by unrest and widespread displacement in the north and entrenched poverty across the country.

The 10-member delegation, which is led by Ambassador Jan Grauls of Belgium, who chairs the Fund's configuration on the CAR, is meeting with key Government ministers in the capital, Bangui, including the economic, planning and international cooperation ministers.

The meetings, which conclude tomorrow, will focus on the CAR's peacebuilding priorities and challenges, and also the nature and scope of the international support the country will need as it tries to rebuild after years of conflict.

In June, the CAR became the fourth country to be placed on the agenda of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, which aims - like the Fund - to help States emerging from conflict avoid the slide back into war or chaos.
