Declaration by Mohamed Ag Ayoya, Humanitarian Coordinator
Bangui, 15 April 2024 – I am deeply dismayed and strongly condemn the recent armed attacks that have resulted in the death of over a dozen civilians and two healthcare workers in the areas of Bakouma and Bangassou. In the same region, an ambulance evacuating an injured civilian was assaulted and looted. The patient succumbed to his/her injuries before reaching the hospital. My heartfelt condolences go out to the affected families.
Vaccination campaigns in the municipalities of Bakouma and Nzacko have been suspended. Additionally, the attacks have led to the displacement of approximately 2,300 residents from neighboring villages. I therefore call on all parties to the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law. Civilian populations and humanitarian workers must never be targeted.
