The Central African Republic (CAR) is one of the poorest countries in the world, currently facing the worst humanitarian crisis since its independence in 1960. More than half of the population – 2.7 million people – remains in need of aid. 20% are displaced within or outside of the country.
-
The crisis has forced around 220 000 people to flee to Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo since December 2013, bringing the number of Central African refugees in neighbouring countries to almost half a million people (462 000).
-
Security remains volatile and unpredictable and continues hindering the work of relief organisations, including in the capital city Bangui.
-
The European Union is the largest donor of humanitarian assistance to CAR with over EUR 213 million provided since 2014. The European Commission alone has provided EUR 83,5 million (in addition to over EUR 21 million for CAR refugees in neighbouring countries) in humanitarian aid since the crisis started.
