I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • WFP Food distributions resumed outside of Bangui (in Bambari, South-East and Batalimo, South-West) on 1 May 2013. WFP continues to scale up its activities as the security situation allows.

  • During the first week of May alone, WFP commodities were distributed to approximately 8,500 beneficiaries in Bangui, Bambari and Batalimo.

  • The security situation remains volatile. Preliminary findings of security assessment missions reveal that the situation is relatively quiet in some locations. However, serious security incidents and looting are still reported regularly in Bangui and across the country.

  • An international contact Group Meeting gathering all the partners of the CAR was held in Brazzaville on 2-3 May. On this occasion, participants validated the transition agenda presented by Prime Minister Tiangaye and expressed concern regarding serious human rights violations, insecurity and the deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation. A special fund to support the 18-months political transition was also set up and a contribution from the Republic of Congo was already announced.
