Since 10 May, the cities of Obo, Mboki, and Zemio, located near the South Sudanese border, have been facing a crisis. A non state armed group has opened at least three simultaneous fronts, demonstrating a significant level of disruption and military capacity. There are reports of reinforcements arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and South Sudan.
The humanitarian situation is worsening, with several displaced in schools and places of worship. Earlier on, UN OCHA reported around 2,000 displaced households in Zemio, but updated figures are still needed. The humanitarian response is severely limited—not only due to insecurity along access routes, but also due to the region’s extreme isolation and logistical challenges.
Other armed groups are taking advantage of the situation to make gains in neighbouring regions, further weakening efforts to manage the crisis in the southeast.
