Central African Republic – Food Insecurity and Humanitarian Needs (DG ECHO, OCHA, FAO) (ECHO Daily Flash of 7 November 2018)
According to the last Integrated Food Security Analysis Phase Classification, food insecurity in CAR remains of serious concern. 40% of the population – some 1.9 million people – are severely food insecure and in need of urgent assistance. Violence and armed conflict remain the major drivers for food insecurity in the country.
Overall, according to the recently completed 2019 Humanitarian Needs Overview, 63% of the population – some 2.9 million people – are expected to be in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in 2019. This is one of the highest figure worldwide in relative terms and constitutes an increase of 16% compared to last year. At the same time, the humanitarian response remains largely underfunded, with the Humanitarian Response Plan 2018 only 39% funded as of early November.
