HUMANITARIAN OVERVIEW

People in the Far North continue to be severely affected by the floods. According to the Regional Delegation of Health, 68,285 households, approximately 409,710 people, including 139,651 children under 5 and 29,428 pregnant women, were affected by the floods, as of 11 October 2024.

Some 56,084 houses were destroyed or damaged, 262 schools flooded, 65 health centres affected, and 82,509 of farmland flooded. After the rains, the rising river levels are causing concerns about a worsening situation in the coming days and weeks. The progressive rise in groundwater levels and the river overflowing continue in the Logone et Chari division, increasing the risk of river flooding. At the beginning of October, people affected by floods in Logone et Chari started to displace to areas considered flood secure. Some 9,747 people (1,527 households) were registered in host families and spontaneous sites in Kousseri between 2 and 9 October, with an additional 4,054 people (576 households) reported in different locations in Logone et Chari between 16 and 21 October.

The Government, local authorities/elites, and a variety of humanitarian organizations are providing assistance to those affected.
