Meningitis Outbreak in the Yaounde Central Prison, Nkolndongo Health District, Center Region (Yaounde Town Sitrep No.10 (19 March 2017)

  • 09/03/2017 at 11 am, reporting of 2 suspected meningitis cases from the Yaounde Central Prison (Kondengui) ;
  • Public Health Emergency Operation Center (EOC) activated ;
  • 19/03/2017, 10th coordination meeting held at the Department for the Control of Disease, Epidemics and Pandemics ;
  • No new suspected cases from the prison since the administration of chemo-prophylaxis ;
  • A total of 19 cases have been recorded to date among which one community case ;
  • Vaccine request approved by ICG and 7079 doses of tetravalent vaccine allocated.

II. NEXT STEPS

  • Continue reinforcing surveillance in health facilities of Yaounde ;
  • Plan for the vaccination campaign in the prison ;
  • Request for drugs used in chemo-prophylaxis and case management ;
  • Continue administering chemo-prophylaxis to contacts;
  • Hold the next coordination meeting scheduled for 20th March 2017, at the Department for the Control of Disease, Epidemics and Pandemics as from 4 pm prompt.
