NRC CAMEROON OPERATION
Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organisation that works for the rights of displaced and vulnerable people during crises.
NRC Cameroon has one coordination office in Yaoundé, and five field offices and sub-offices in Maroua, Kousseri, Buea, Bamenda and Batouri. As of August 31st, 2024, NRC Cameroun counts a team of 160 staff (152 National staff, 8 International staff) among which 39,3% of women.
General context
During the reported period (May - August 2024), the security context in the Far North region was marked by two military operations namely “Lake Sanity 2” and “Mountain Sanity” in Logone et Chari and Mount Mandara. In addition, the region is experiencing its most devastating rainy season since 1990, affecting more than 365,000 people and destroying thousands of homes and hectares of crops among others. Humanitarian access is even more affected, limiting humanitarian actors response.
In the East region, the security situation was relatively calm. Nevertheless, criminality increased in Batouri, and administrative requirements for access to certain areas were tightened, particularly in the border localities which are experiencing various security alerts. In addition, an increase in road accidents along the N1 road linking the East and Adamawa regions was observed, due to the deterioration of road conditions.
The Northwest and Southwest regions continue to suffer from violent clashes between state forces and non-state armed groups (NSAGs). Civilians endure abductions, extortion, property destruction, and over 30 days of enforced ghost towns/lockdowns. Increased use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and movement restrictions heighten tensions. Government military operations have escalated, resulting in the deaths of several NSAG Commanders. Meanwhile, NGO staff are increasingly being targeted, especially when engaging in civil documentation programs, making their operations even more challenging and dangerous.
