Cameroon: North-West and South-West - Situation Report No. 70 (October 2024)

Attachments

This report is produced by OCHA Cameroon in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period from 1 to 31 October 2024.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • At least 251 children treated for severe acute malnutrition in partner-supported treatment centres.
  • Some 54,110 persons reached with emergency healthcare services
  • Ten attacks on education in the North-West and South-West • At least 123 unaccompanied and separated children provided with alternative care.

SITUATION OVERVIEW / HUMANITARIAN ACCESS

The population continues to suffer the consequences of violent incidents, either as direct targets or caught in hostilities/crossfire, or improvised explosive devices (IED) explosions.

Inter-community tensions were reported in Bui, Donga-Mantung and Mezam divisions, resulting in at least four deaths and injuries. Affected communities expressed their anger in public demonstrations, with residents of Sop village in Ndu subdivision blocking the Sop-Ndu road axis on 9 October to protest repeated attacks by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen.

On 1 October, the Divisional Officer of Idabato Subdivision (Ndian Division) and a local government employee were abducted by unidentified gunmen who then fled by boat. Government authorities have since then suspended the circulation of boats on the stretch of waters in the Ndian division, until further notice. This measure has an impact on the ability of humanitarian organisations to move and deliver aid to people in need in the division.

During the month, a NSAG announced the closure of the road connecting Ndu to the West region via Mbonso until further notice, and a movement restriction along the Bamenda - Batibo axis on Tuesdays and Saturdays for two months, affecting movements of populations, including that of humanitarian workers.
