Launch of the development of national mine action strategy 2017-2025

On January 15th, 2016, the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) supported by the Clearing for Results Project of UNDP organized a launch of the development of National Mine Action Strategy (NMAS) 2017-2025. The event was presided over by H.E. Prum Sophakmonkol, Secretary General of the CMAA and participated by stakeholders such as line ministries, development partners, mine action operators and relevant non-governmental organizations.

The purpose of the meeting was to raise the understanding of all stakeholders and to get their full participation in the process and master plan for NMAS 2017-2025.

"The current NMAS (2010-2019) is the first comprehensive national mine action strategy for supporting the main target in the development of the country and the Government's poverty reduction…to complement the efforts of the 10 years extension request in accordance with Article 5 of the Ottawa Convention supported the Cartagena action plan and National Strategic Development Plan, and updated national policies such as Rectangular Strategy Phase 2, Cambodia Millennium Development Goals 9. etc.” H.E. Prum Sophakmonkol stressed in his opening remark.

He also added that "The context which is required to set the new strategy is as a state party’s new commitment to the Ottawa Convention, the Maputo Action Plan, the Convention of Cluster Munitions, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons , Protocol 5 on Explosive Remnants of War, the trend of development partners in providing assistance, the decision of the UN general assembly on the Millennium Development Goals agenda, the Post-2015 sustainable development and Cambodia’s participation in the ASEAN Economic Community, to launch and host of the Asian Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) and other national contexts such as Cambodia transitioning from a low-income to a middle-income country.”

During the meeting, the process and master plan for NMAS 2017-2025 development was also presented to all participants by the CMAA representative. The National Mine Action Strategy 2017-2025 will be completed by the end of June 2016.
