Caritas releases Mid-Term Review of He Oranga Taurikura
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand has released the mid-term review of He Oranga Taurikura – A Thriving Life, our ambitious five-year development programme building thriving lives across five Pacific and two Asian countries.
In an innovative peer-to-peer review of the Programme, we harnessed the expertise of the 10 He Oranga Taurikura community-based partners instead of external consultants. Partners provided members for the Review Team, who conducted online interviews; field visits and brought the report together in a week-long analysis and writing workshop in Wellington.
The process established better understanding and relationships between He Oranga Taurikura partners, added valuable cross-cultural experience to partner staff, and reinforced collective ownership of the Programme.
All partners were confident they would reach their goals for the Programme by its June 2026 end date. The Review process also identified and explored five key themes that are important for the success and long-term outcomes of the Programme:
- Sustainable funding for partners.
- Gaps between training provided and participants’ ability to apply on the ground.
- Community-level connections that support the local population.
- Institutional capacity of the partners.
- Integrating traditional knowledge and practices into activities.
The Review has given further expression to the whakataukī (proverb) underpinning the Programme and identified learning opportunities. The experience of the reviewers will be shared at the Australia and New Zealand Evaluation Association’s conference in Auckland in November.
The Mid-Term Review report called ‘Taking Stock’ was published in August, and is available here: https://www.caritas.org.nz/s/240805_He-Oranga-Taurikura_MidTerm-Review_TAKING-STOCK.pdf
