Federal Foreign Office extends humanitarian aid for Côte d'Ivoire

The Federal Foreign Office is making a further EUR 500,000 available to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from the humanitarian aid budget. The funds are to be used to provide accommodation, protection and care for some 90,000 people who have fled to Liberia to escape ongoing combat in the west of Côte d'Ivoire. In particular, organized camps are to be set up on the Liberian side of the border and drinking water, food and basic medical services are to be provided for the refugees.

The humanitarian aid provided by the Federal Government for Côte d'Ivoire since the start of the current crisis in September 2002 has thus reached EUR 1.05 million. Last year, the Federal Foreign Office was able to support the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with EUR 300,000 and UNHCR with EUR 250,000 for relief programmes in Côte d'Ivoire.
