Emergency assistance in post-crisis Abidjan

ABIDJAN -- In response to the crisis caused by the long-lasting political stand-off, ACTED is targeting the most vulnerable households in Abobo and Yopougon, the most affected ‘communes’ of Abidjan, with the latter being the showdown of the last battles for control of the city. The project is designed to inject liquidity into the most vulnerable households, who experienced displacement during the conflict. ACTED will first grant approximately € 30 to over 1,600 households of the two communes, so beneficiaries can address their immediate food needs. A short-term Cash for Work program, targeting over 5,000 households working on a 10-day rotation principle to clean up Abobo and Yopougon’s roads, sideways and gutters, will minimize hygiene and access problems. Rollout in Yopougon should end by 20th June, making ACTED the only NGO to implement Cash for Work activities in the area since the crisis, spearheading future interventions.
