WFP Burundi Situation Report #2 WFP Response to New Influx of Refugees in Burundi 18 December 2025

Attachments

  • An upsurge of violence in South Kivu, DRC, during December 2025 triggered heightened cross‑border movements into Burundi. More than 92,000 new refugees have arrived in Burundi in two weeks, doubling the refugee caseload to 172,000, and the influx continues.
  • By December 17, WFP reached 78,540 new arrivals (85% coverage) with hot meals and is expanding its assistance, preparing its shift to dry rations and/or CBT. • WFP requires immediate funding amounting to USD 14.4 million to sustain food assistance for 92,000 new refugees, between January and June 2026, with 100% ration. This amount does not include the needs of old refugees.
  • WFP’s refugee operation is facing severe funding gaps forcing WFP to reduce rations to 75 percent already, with the risk of further reducing rations as WFP faces an imminent pipeline break in January 2026.
