Highlights
• UNICEF provided life-saving treatment to 472 children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in flood-affected zones. In addition, 12,142 children were screened for early malnutrition detection and referral for treatment, and 4,227 caregivers were sensitized to optimal infant and young child feeding practices.
• A total of 2,452 students enrolled in flood-affected schools in Gatumba and Kinyinya communes could continue their learning in 31 temporary learning spaces set up by UNICEF. Additionally, UNICEF installed two tents at Gasenyi I school (Mutimbuzi commune in Bujumbura province), allowing 334 flood-affected children to continue learning in inadequate classrooms.
• In Cholera hotspot communities in Cibitoke province, UNICEF provided 58,040 people, including 25,747 children, with access to safe drinking water through the extension and rehabilitation of the water supply system. In the same areas, UNICEF ensured the construction of 111 household latrines benefiting 670 people, including 355 children. Moreover, through water trucking, UNICEF ensured access to safe drinking water for 211 households relocated to the new IDP site in Gateri.
• UNICEF scaled up its protection interventions in IDP sites and surrounding communities, reaching 4,258 people, including 3,452 children, with psychosocial support and mental health services.
• UNICEF supported 1,198 people in 40 savings groups in the Mubimbi IDP site through a cash transfer to enable them to start up their incomegenerating activities.
