Highlights
- El Niño has wreaked havoc across Burundi, with 47 reported dead, over 298,222 people affected and more than 47,915 forced to flee because of flooding and landslides since September 2023.
- UNICEF supported the continuity of essential health services in floods-affected health districts, reaching 80,488 children that were treated for malaria and other common diseases.
- To fight against cholera and other transmissible diseases, UNICEF improved sanitation services in schools and communities. Interventions will benefit to more than 800 children and their families in the Mutambara IDPs site and in floods-affected areas in Cibitoke province.
- UNICEF continued to ensure psychosocial support to children and adults and provide alternative care and family reunification to separated and unaccompanied children, reaching 1,652 people, including 1,540 children.
- In the Mubimbi IDPs site, UNICEF supported the establishment of 36 savings groups, that will receive training on setting up and managing income-generating activities, along with financial support to launch livelihood-focused businesses aimed at enhancing their resilience.
