Highlights

  • The current socio-political environment in Burundi remains highly volatile, exacerbated by the assassination of the former Chief of Intelligence on 2 August and the shooting the following day of leading human rights activist.

  • On 5August, a 17-year-old boy was shot dead, bringing the total death toll of children to nine since the start of the crisis in April

  • 17 children in total have been sentenced on charges of ‘involvement in armed groups’ following fighting in the northern province of Kayanza in June. 34 others remain in preventive detention as they await trial

  • Results of a screening exercise in Nyanza Lac health district reveal a prevalence of acute malnutrition much higher than expected in the harvest season, with 8.3% global acute malnutrition and 1.0% severe acute malnutrition

  • UNICEF Burundi is appealing for US$ 8,700,000 and is currently 87% underfunded.
