Situation Update
• 70,0001 people have crossed into Burundi since the beginning of 2025, fleeing the ongoing armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). An estimated 53% are children.
• The update made by UNHCR2 on 06 Jun 2025 shows a change in population movement figures and specifies that 35,041 people have been recently displaced due to the conflict in eastern DRC, of which 16,526 are placed in the sites, 15,809 in the host communities of Cibitote, Rugina, Rugombo and 2,706 in transit and border centers. 23,785 people are said to have returned to the DRC and 5,346 Burundian refugees in the DRC have spontaneously repatriated to Burundi.
• The discrepancies in the figures compared to the previous update are justified by the volatility of the conflict in the DRC where refugees arrive, leave and move according to clashes and opportunities for family reunification, which makes the figures dynamic; the transition from initial enumeration (Level 1 Registration) to an individual biometric registration (Level 2); the lack of access to certain areas that are informal entry points and spontaneous and commuting return with some refugees making short round trips to inquire about the condition of their property or to check the situation in the DRC and bring food to their family members.
• UNHCR is leading the overall response, while UNICEF is co-lead of the Education, Health and Nutrition, and WASH sectors and the Child Protection sub-sector according to the framework of the Refugee Coordination Model (RCM).
• The Burundi Inter-Agency Plan for Aid to Refugees has been finalized. Pending its adoption and launch by the government, the government has authorized its provisional use to facilitate resource mobilization.
