At a donor conference in Burundi, development minister Bert Koenders agreed to increase Dutch financial support to €66 million over the next three years.
Most of it will be channelled into training in the security sector, humanitarian aid and improving access to financial markets. The Netherlands will also contribute to the national plan for the disarming of former rebels.
Burundi is emerging from thirteen years of civil war in which an estimated 400,000 died. The Netherlands regards Burundi as a fragile state and believes that development aid can help stabilise the country. Minister Koenders announced that he would increase support "on the assumption that the Burundi will keep its promise to enter into a structural political dialogue with the international community".
