The Executive Representative of the Secretary General in Burundi, Charles Petrie, confirms his resignation

The Executive Representative of the Secretary General in Burundi, Charles Petrie, confirms his resignation effective 1 November 2010 to pursue the work he began in Somalia.

He had intended to remain in Burundi until 31 December 2010, the end of BINUB's mandate, but his departure was brought forward because of the political situation in Somalia.

The UN remains committed to its efforts and continues the constructive on-going dialogue with the Government of Burundi in regards to UN's future presence in the country.

The United Nations will ensure a seamless transition of BINUB's leadership at this critical time and efforts are underway to identify Mr. Petrie's successor rapidly.
