SITUATION OVERVIEW

On the night of the 9 February 2014 a heavy rain storm hit the northern communes of Bujumbura. The storm resulted in 62 deaths (70% are children) and several dozens injured. 150 persons were initially reported missing, but were found later. More than 3700 houses were severely damaged or completely destroyed.

A bridge that joins central town with the UN compound also housing UNICEF offices was seriously damage, making initial crossing impossible. As of 11 February it is possible to cross in single file. This is slowing down movements to and from the office.

A joint rapid assessment was conducted by members of the National Platform and agencies of the UN System (UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, WFP, UNHCR, UNFPA) on the three most affected municipalities.
Kinama, Buterere, Kamenge are the most effected communes.

Kinama Commune and a small part of Mutimbuzi commune (Bujumbura rural): 616 homes destroyed, 616 households without shelter, rendered displaced.The most affected neighbourhood are Gasenyi Gahahe , Kanga , Buhinyuza , Bukirasazi , Muramvya , Ruyigi and Bubanza .

Buterere Commune: 3007 houses destroyed, two deaths and two missing children.

Kamenge Commune and sub colline Gatere (Bujumbura rural): 119 houses destroyed and 48 whose contents were swept away by the water. The locality of Gatunguru remains inaccessible.
