Context
Since January 2025, over 70,000 people arriving in Burundi from the Democratic Republic of Congo are in need of international refugee protection and humanitarian assistance. The people include rural and urban populations f leeing conflict from the DRC, and some returning Burundians. Most arrivals are from Uvira, Walungu, Bukavu, Saké, Minova, and Goma. In response, the Government of Burundi has granted prima facie refugee status to congolese seeking protection since January 2025. The figure of 23,785 spontaneous returns came from the Protection Monitoring Report, which was compiled by the UNHCR DRC and its partners.
