SITUATION UPDATE

The periodic monitoring report is produced in collaboration with the seven humanitarian sectors active in Burundi. This first report of 2023 covers the period from January to June.

In 2023, the humanitarian needs analysis identified 1.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. To meet the needs of these people, humanitarian partners developed a multi-sectoral response plan to assist 1.1 million vulnerable people (internally displaced people, returnees, and other vulnerable categories of the population affected by emergencies, including communities, host families, non-displaced victims of natural disasters, people experiencing food insecurity and people living with disabilities).

In July 2023, taking into account the results of the IPC analysis according to which 19% of the population is facing a situation of acute food insecurity, including 105,000 people in critical phase (IPC 4), humanitarian actors revised the response plan to target 500,000 additional people in need of emergency assistance. Following this revision, the number of people targeted increased from 1.1 million to 1.6 million and the financial request from 194.2 million to 237.2 million US dollars, or an additional 43 million dollars.

To respond to this worrying humanitarian situation, humanitarian actors in collaboration with the Burundian Government have provided vital assistance to 571,000 people, or 36% of the target, including internally displaced people, returnees, people in acute food insecurity, the host community, and people living with disabilities.

This report describes the different achievements of the seven sectors in terms of shelter and non-food items, education, nutrition, protection, health, food security, water, hygiene and sanitation, as well as the response to returnees and refugees for the period January to June 2023. WASH sector has reached its entire target (100%), while Health, Shelter and Non-Food Items, Education, and Food Security and Livelihoods sectors have reached less than 30% of their targets.

To date, the humanitarian response plan is funded at 25.5% of the 237.2 million required. Sectors remain poorly funded, negatively impacting the quality, volume and effectiveness of the response.
