Burundi – Civil Unrest (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 July 2015)

  • In Burundi, presidential elections took place on 21 July. Gunfire and grenades explosions were heard the night before and two deaths were reported. The results of the presidential elections should be released this Friday.

  • According to UNHCR, the total number of Burundian refugees in the region has reached 175 562 (71 158 in Rwanda, 79 871 in Tanzania, 13 368 in DRC and 11 165 in Uganda).

  • In Tanzania, still no progress is observed towards the identification of a new camp for Burundian refugees. Nyarugusu refugee camp is overcrowded hosting more than 145 000 refugees. Health conditions are deteriorating with increase of cases of malaria and rate of malnutrition.
