HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the WHO African region, since the beginning of the outbreak in 2023 as of March 3, 2024, a total of 222,011 suspected cases of dengue, including 101,226 confirmed and probable cases and 817 deaths have been reported from 15 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, and Togo).

  • From January 1, 2024, to March 3, 2024, there have been 16,641 new suspected cases of dengue, including 7, 554 new confirmed and probable cases, and 30 new deaths, have been reported from 8 countries that have an active dengue transmission (Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Senegal).

  • Mauritius, Cabo Verde, and Mali are currently countries of concern where dengue is particularly prevalent.

  • Overall, Burkina Faso accounts for 74% of reported cases and 91% of recorded fatalities, but the situation is under control and cases are declining since EW44/2023. The outbreak has been declared over in Burkina Faso

  • Senegal and Mali have experienced simultaneous outbreaks of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, highlighting the issue of under-reporting of cases due to limited capacity for early detection, and confirmatory diagnostics in most countries and the need for an integrated arboviral response.

  • As per the WHO Emergency Response Framework (ERF), a joint (EPR/UCN-TVD) regional Incident Management Support Team (IMST) has been established in each affected country and regional levels to coordinate the response.

  • An updated comprehensive guideline for preparedness and response to dengue outbreaks in the WHO African region is being developed.

  • The WHO African Region conducted a 5-day webinar series on dengue preparedness and control from February 26 to March 1, 2024. The series involved about 530 participants every day from 47 African and non-African countries, facilitated by 20 panelists and experts from various organizations.

The webinars included presentations from WHO AFRO, WHO HQ Geneva, PAHO, WHO TAG-Arbovirus, Kenya Institute of Medical Research, Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Biomedical Research Institute of the French Armed Forces, WHO Country Offices, and Ministries of Health of Gambia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. All training materials will be available soon on the WHO African Region website. The WHO African Region website will shortly provide access to all training materials that offer guidance on various subjects including epidemiology, case definition, diagnosis, clinical case management, vector surveillance, integrated vector management, outbreak preparedness and response, and risk communication.
