This Weekly Bulletin focuses on public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African region. This week’s articles cover:
- Humanitarian situation in Ghana
- Dengue fever in Burkina Faso
- Diphtheria in Guinea
For each of these events, a brief description, followed by public health measures implemented and an interpretation of the situation is provided.
A table is provided at the end of the bulletin with information on all new and ongoing public health events currently being monitored in the region, as well as recent events that have been controlled and closed.
Major issues and challenges include:
- Burkina Faso is grappling with a Dengue fever outbreak with several critical challenges in the current efforts to respond to the outbreak. A significant shortage of rapid diagnostic tests, reagents, consumables, and essential emergency medications hampers the ability to promptly diagnose and manage cases at healthcare facilities. Additionally, the low rate of case reporting on the STELab (System for Tracking Epidemiological Data and Laboratory Specimens) platform, limits effective analysis and response. Furthermore, misinformation on social media, and a funding shortfall pose further challenges, highlighting the need for immediate attention and strategic planning to ensure the successful management of the outbreak.
