As of February 2025, 3,299,822 individuals have been displaced in the Central Sahel and Liptako Gourma region, including 2,670,331 internally displaced persons (IDPs) (81% of the displaced population) and 629,491 refugees (19% of the displaced population). Seventy-seven per cent of IDPs were in Burkina Faso (2,062,534 IDPs), while 14 per cent resided in Mali (378,363 IDPs) and 8 per cent in Niger (202,925 IDPs). Compared to February 2024, the numbers show an increase in IDPs in Niger (+7%) and Mali (+7%), but no changes in Burkina Faso. The crisis’ recent spill over to coastal countries, namely Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin, shows growing number of refugees coming from the Central Sahel and populations internally displaced. In February, 26,509 were internally displaced in the four countries (12,501 in Benin, 3,837 in Ghana and 10,171 in Togo). Compared to February 2024, the numbers show an increase in IDPs in Benin (+42%) and Ghana (+22%), and a decrease in Togo (-45%).
